2016 marks the 20th year the World Gourmet Summit (WGS) is held in Singapore. On this special 20th anniversary, the WGS is pulling out all the stops with a star-studded cast of world-class chefs, local culinary talents, and visiting industry personalities and experts. The WGS 2016 promises to be a feast of exquisite gastronomic experiences.
At the official press conference for WGS 20 just a couple of days passed, WGS released the latest details of the upcoming the WGS 2016 and they definitely did not disappoint. For those unfamiliar with the WGS, this year’s is its 20th since it was first inaugurated in 1997. WGS founder and producer, Peter Knipp, was there in attendance to discuss the topic of the relevancy of WGS still relevant after 20 years.
Since 1997, the WGS has seen some 200 Michelin-starred chefs, 300 masterchefs and 150 wineries participate with over 1.5 million delicacies served in the past 20 years. In addition to pointing out these facts, Mr Knipp also commented that in his 38 years in Singapore, he has witnessed a significant progress in local culinary standard and that local chefs are still as, if not more, talented than when he first set foot at Paya Lebar Air Base. However, he was quick to justify that for that very reason, WSG remains relevant as it serves as a “platform to showcase the best of our local culture through food” as it “bring attentions to our country by having them work with the best in the world.’
During the official announcement ceremony, WGS teased us with some new developments expected for this year’s edition and beyond. This year’s theme ’20’ will be WSG’s tribute to 20 sumptuous years of great food, fine wines and unique dining. As part of it’s ’20’ theme, WGS 2016 will see a line-up of 20 Michelin-starred and Masterchefs participating. Included among the number are up-and-comers Yoshinori Ishii and Javier Aranda alongside heavyweights such as Nacho Manzano, Takagi Kazuo and Arnaud Bignon. Other famous participants include Meir Adoni, Mark Moriarty, John See, Violet Oon and many more. Gourmet enthusiasts can expect to gain culinary insights and other useful tips from the array of masterclasses and workshops, some of which will be presented by the visiting Masterchefs. And to mark this momentous occasion, this year’s event gets off to a sweet start as the opening reception is set to feature an 800 kilogram chocolate sculpture. Not without a abit of drama, Mr Knipp left a slight tinge of mystery as he promised the summit will be the last year in its current format, teasing us for what’s to expect next from the one of a kind festival.
While all that eating and drinking is going on, WGS is also intent on doing its part for charity. For its milestone year, WGS announced its partnership with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) in its “Mindful Eating” campaign. A charitable organisation that provides care for patients with kidney failure while raising public awareness for the prevention of kidney diseases, NKF will play host to WGS in a Charity Gala Dinner held on 7 April at the Fullerton Hotel Singapore. During the dinner, an auction will be held with proceeds going towards the NKF in aid of funding their programmes which include dialysis and education efforts to curb the rise of diabetes and hypertension. The theme for the gala reflects the message of ‘Mindful Eating’, to promote the mindset of eating good while doing so healthily, that both organizations strongly believe in.
As a nod towards promoting the culinary scene locally, the annual Awards of Excellence will be handed to established and emerging industry stars to recognize their work. Awarded in two main categories: the People’s Choice Awards and Industry Awards, the Awards aim to honour individuals and establishments who have played a pivotal role in promoting professionalism, exemplary service and innovation in dining in Asia. The winners will be announced at the Awards of Excellence Ceremony in conjunction with the WGS Opening Reception on 5 April.
As an ode to its cooking roots, WSG announcement ceremony featured a live pesto preparation demonstration by Mrs Giovanna Randore. With all the exciting upcoming events, WGS 2016 looks set to be a delicious affair.
