DJ Mike Candys – Siloso Beach Party

Just three more days till we reach the end of 2014, which also means that the Siloso Beach Party is finally coming up. SBP will be headlined by the incredible DJ Mike Candys who is currently ranked #85 in the Top 10 DJs of 2014. We’ve had the amazing opportunity to talk to him about his journey as a DJ and some of his craziest and most memorable experiences.

While he may have started out more than three decades ago, “30 years ago.  I (DJ Mike Candys) produced my first electronic tracks when I was 13, with [only] a Commodore C64 Computer and a simple FM Synthesizer,” you would be surprised that he only started DJing seriously 5 years ago. It was only when some of his “productions for my “Project” Mike Candys hit the charts in several countries and that’s when the Artists DJ Mike Candys was born because clubs and festivals wanted to book me,” he explained. This little known fact about his DJ journey only serves to emphasize just how meteoric his rise has been as he has been a mainstay in the top 100 list for the last 3 years. This has transformed what used to be a hobby into a professional career that allows him to “travel around the world, play at huge festivals and great clubs and have the opportunities to work with great artists.” It really is quite incredible but then again should not come as too great a surprise considering how long he has been working at it [30 years].

However, something that sets Mike Candys apart from the rest of the other DJs is that he was already a trained classical musician, and quite like street dancers who incorporate their classical ballet training into mesmerizing styles and dances, he does the same thing with music. He explains, “I see DJing more as a musical act than just being an entertainer playing nice music. I always try to compose my sets like one big piece of music. So for example, mixing in key is very important to me and I also got in mind a dramaturgy for my whole set of 60-120mins.” This is another reason I’m so pumped up to catch him live because his live sets are guaranteed to be completely different from the understand. He understands this, “I did not just want to be DJ that would be behind the desk tapping buttons. I wanted it to be something one would remember visually so I decided to wear a mask. I built several prototypes till I came up with the idea of that Smiley-Ball. I built all my smiley masks myself at home in the garage.” Thus, the birth of the famous yellow smiley face!

DJing, or being a professional musician in general is bound to leave behind some unforgettable memories and Mike Candys is no different. “One really crazy moment was when I played a show in Poland in a big club and as soon as I entered the main hall, the resident DJ stopped the music and the whole crowd just screamed my name for a minute again and again. I was so overwhelmed and it felt really unreal. So far, there have been two festivals that I will never forget: one in Vienna with 30,000 people and one at a huge sandy beach in France where I played right at sunset in front of 20, 000 people,” he recounts. While Vienna and a sunset in France is great, I’m confident that the Siloso Beach Party will be another once-in-a-lifetime memory for both DJ Mike Candys and for all of us.

(Usher in the New Year with some breathtaking fireworks!)

2015 promises to be a New Year, a new year for all of us, to move on from the regrets of 2014 and to build on the beauty and successes of this year. 2015 also promises to be a big year for DJ Mike Candys, “right now I’m finishing my upcoming single release with an American singer. This is going to be a melodic vocal-dance track. In January, I’m going to release a Big room Festival Tune called “Jupiter” that I produced with my Partner Jack Holiday. I’m also working on an album that should be out in Fall 2015.” Let’s just hope that 2015 will be equally kind to us and I can think of no better way to start it then with the Siloso Beach Party with DJ Mike Candys.
