The best description for the upcoming International Music Summit (IMS) Asia-Pacific would be comparing it to the now world famous TED talks but with a distinct focus on music. It’ll be happening on December 11 at W Singapore – Sentosa Cove and it’s a perfect opportunity for music lovers to delve a little deeper into the industry that produces some of your favourite hits. Perhaps some of you notice that IMS is happening in close proximity to ZoukOut 2015 and that also means that IMS will feature some pretty amazing Keynote speakers – Armin Van Buuren and Kaskade.
IMS Asia Pacific will feature 30 different prominent artists and industry players and they will be sharing their wealth of experience and knowledge in a variety of topics. The event serves as both a perfect opportunity to unite the industry as well as to educate the wider world about the opportunities, challenges and successes of the industry.
To check out this exciting Summit (there are only a few times when summits can be considered exciting), you can purchase a badge ($198) that will give you access to all panels as well as a buffet lunch and cocktail party. Here are some of the more interesting topics that will be on discussion.
Saving Sydney – While Canberra is the political capital of Australia, Sydney has undeniably been the cultural capital of Australia for decades. However, in recent years, the music scene in Sydney has decimated. Speakers will talk about how and why this has happened as well as lessons to prevent it from happening to other cities.
Protect the Dancefloor – Will feature deeper discussions about the entire region and EDM’s challenges to operate, which I feel is particularly apt considering that Zouk Singapore (one of the biggest dance clubs in the world) was just recently sold to Genting.
East Meets West – Artists and musicians from both sides of the globe have always sought to conquer the markets on the other side but with every success story and transcendent artist, there is an even bigger number of artists who have tried but failed. In this panel, artists from both regions will discuss Asia and their approach in conquering the region.
New Horizon – This is a panel with an eye on the future as the focus will be on exciting new initiatives in the region that will bring about a new epoch in music. These key new initiatives include ID&T, Pacha Macau and others
Keynote Interviews – Interviews with 2 of the world’s biggest music stars, Armin Van Buuren and Kaskade. Armin Van Buuren is not simply a producer or musician but rather, he is a brand. His A State of Trance radio show is one of the world’s most popular and anticipated weekly show and has since evolved into a live show experience and touring concept. Besides an unprecedented 5 times on top of the annual DJ Mag Top 100 list, he is also the co-founder of the Armada Music record label thus there is so much that we can learn from him. Kaskade on the other hand is a pioneer in today’s ubiquitous EDM scene, he is the mastermind behind the post-rock EDM revolution that is responsible for capturing the imagination of a completely new generation of music lovers. The keynote interviews are truly one of the highlights of this year’s IMS.
In Conversation – Sharam of Deep Dish fame will talk with the Head of Beatport Asia, Richie McNeill and I wonder what gems will sprout from a conversation with 2 people with a deep passion for music.
Some of the other speakers include Rahul Kukreja (co-founder of Livescape), Mark Lawrence (CEO of the Association for Electronic Music), Mikhail Schemm (Editori-in-Chief of Pulse Radio), Godwin Pereira (Owner of Club Kyo), Lau Hoe Yin (Head of Programming for Zouk KL), Sharam (DJ), Simon Napier-Bell (Artist Manager) and many more!
