As part of his 2016 World Tour, Asia’s top guitar virtuoso Sungha Jung will return to Singapore in May.
Sungha Jung has been hailed by many guitar lovers and musicians as the finest teenage fingerstyle guitarist in the world. His renditions of tunes from across many genres have gone viral on YouTube with over 400 million views worldwide. From classical to jazz, from contemporary to Broadway, Sungha Jung combines artistic wizardry with his spell-binding technique to create a sound unique that is wholly his own.
As a five year old, Sungha Jung picked up a guitar for the first time after watching his father play it. He then improved himself by watching and imitating videos of seasoned veterans such as Ulli Boegerhausen, Andy McKee and Kotaro Oshio. It was his rendition of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song which shot him to stardom after the video was viewed by over 4 million viewers on YouTube. Since then he been on many worldwide tours and has performed with the likes of Jason Mraz, 2NE1, Tommy Emmanuel, as well as fellow YouTube stars Sam Tsui and Kurt Schneider.
This year, Sungha Jung will be releasing his sixth solo album and his visit to Singapore will coincidentally also be his sixth consecutive one. Fans at last year’s SG50 show will recall his specially arranged version of Kit Chan’s ‘Home’ and Stefanie Sun’s ‘We Will Get There’. This year, Sungha Jung will be supported by Singapore’s very own Neil Chan and fans can expect a strong showing of solo and duet guitar music featuring a carefully chosen set list of originals and crowd favourites. As part of his trip this year, Sungha Jung will also be judging the Sungha Jung Guitar Competition, the largest fingerstyle guitar competition in Southeast Asia. The winner of this competition will be given the opportunity to open the show the next day.
