SILOSO BEACH PARTY – DJ CHARLOTTE & JENNI-F

Merry Christmas everybody! I hope everyone is having a great christmas and just being happy  with family and friends, Christmas is by far one of my favourite holidays, second only to the New Year. Back when I was living overseas, one of our New Year traditions was setting off fireworks in our street but this is nothing short of an impossibility here in Singapore and thus the last few New Years have been a little lackluster. Thus, I am incredibly excited to have found out about Siloso Beach Party, the ultimate countdown to the New Year. There will be 5 different distinct party zones and this is not even including the sandy dance floor and foam pool that makes the 6pm to 6am time appear far too short. The DJs that will be spinning at Siloso Beach Party (SBP) will include some of the best international, regional and local DJs and today we are happy to present to you DJ Charlotte as well as DJ Jenni-F.

For those who are not too familiar with either of these talented female DJs, here’s a little food for thought. DJ Charlotte, “Having started her DJ-ing career at the age of 12, she has spun for numerous events such as the launch of Linkin Park’s album ‘A Thousand Suns’ and been a guest DJ at the Beatz Fusion DJ Competition. This marks her third year at the Siloso Beach Party.” DJ Jenni-F, ”At 17 years old, Malaysian-born DJ Jenni-F is known as Asia’s Youngest
Video DJ. She brings her own signature style of mixing, which sets her apart from other DJs in her age group.”

Both DJ Charlotte and DJ Jenni-F are both very young DJs yet are obviously very talented having been asked to spin at SBP at such a young age. Both started and have enjoyed music since a very young age with DJ Charlotte picking up DJing at 12 and at “age 13, I got recognized and from there I was given so many opportunities such as gigs at Zirca, Supperclub, TAB and Chateaux.” Just thinking back at what I was doing at 13 makes me slightly embarrassed about myself yet thoroughly impressed at how driven she was and how seriously she took her passion. DJ Jenni-F, currently only 17 which is completely mind blowing since she’ll be playing for an audience that is guaranteed to be older than her, has an origin story similar to that of Charlotte who had a musical childhood. Jenni-F explains, “when I first hung around a club for the first time with my friends, what caught my eye wasn’t other things but the DJs, the way they controlled the whole crowd flows. At that time, it hit me that this was “something different and I should do that!” and that’s how everything started.” It’s really interesting to hear about what DJs think about when they are at a club and it really is completely different from what we normal people think about as clubs and parties. Yet it really is important for DJs to consider how to control the crowd, how to ride on the waves of the crowd’s high and how to get the crowd going when the mood is down.

Just a glance at the names of the annual DJ Mag top 100 DJs list makes it clear that being a DK and the EDM industry itself is a largely male dominated industry thus making it as a female DJ is really quite impressive. The first female DJs to place in the top 100 were Australian sisters who go by the moniker of NERVO who placed at #46 in 2012. While both Charlotte and Jenni-F acknowledge some of the challenges that they face as young female DJs, with Charlotte saying that “Of course, there have been instances where I’ve been pushed around by older male DJs,” they also have fun with this challenge, “honestly I feel that it’s good to be in a male dominated industry to prove that girls can DJs and do it just as well as guys.” For Jenni-F, the challenge of being a female DJ is that “many people have the perception that female DJs are always sell outs because of their pretty faces. The hardest part for me was breaking this perception,” though I must say that she seems to be doing a good job of this and not for a lack of a pretty face.

Being a DJ will inevitable mean having some of the craziest and most memorable experiences and memories ever and of course I was eager to find out some of their craziest experience in their short career thus far. For Charlotte, “My craziest and most memorable experience has got to be last year at Siloso Beach Party where I did the opening set at the Foam Pool stage. An hour into my set and the crowd were going crazy! Everyone was so excited and dancing that the crowd broke one of the platforms right in front of me. As bad as it may sound, I honestly felt really happy that everyone was having a great time dancing to my performance.”: As for Jenni-F, what she likes being a DJ is that “you are always the center view of the crowd, you are the Queen Elsa in the club, everyone is cheering and all eyes are on you.” Just like Jenni-F who has until now has had all her performances “done in limited spaces, closed dome clubs, and I’ve never gotten a chance to perform at an outdoor gig” we are all really looking forwards SBP as “I’m sure it will be awesome! I can just imagine thousands of people cheering.” Just hearing about DJ Charlotte’s experiences has me shaking in anticipation and excitement for what will sure to be an unforgettable night. It also leaves me questioning why do people always diss Singapore as a place with a dull and lifeless nightlife when SBP is just one of the examples that proves otherwise.

DJ Charlotte spins music that can be described as “floor filing progressive house mash-ups with mainstream stuff” that inevitably makes her a crowd favourite as she mixes up some of our favourite songs. On the other hand, Jenni-F is a little more vague in the kind of music that she plays though I have confidence in the quality of music that will be played at SBP. Both DJs say that their perfect way to spend New Year’s Eve is at SBP and for once, I am in complete agreement. Get your tickets now at $68 here and I can’t wait to see you there!
