Singapore turns 50 this year! And there was no better way to celebrate the nation turning 50 than with the Tiger Beer’s SG50 Unofficial Official Party. Patriots and Beer lovers united as they voted for a chance to join the nation’s finest brewery for our nation’s jubilee celebration. Though it was a Wednesday, party-goers started queuing up as early as 5pm outside the magnificent Capitol Theatre, hoping to get in early to get the party started.
Fans had gone online over the last few weeks to vote for the party features they wanted to see at the event and a chance to get an invite. For the lucky ones that had managed to get their names on the guest-list, they arrived in full force, filling the venue to max capacity. The vanguard outside the Capitol Theatre was transformed into a full on party venue featuring many crowd-sourced party highlights that celebrated our Singaporean-ness, but with a twist.
Tiger fans were greeted with quirky twists to well-loved Singaporean icons such as a Merlion Sculpture created with recycled Tiger Beer cans, an ice sculpture of Marina Bay Sands, a hawker that doubled up as a DJ and a conveyer belt bar serving fresh-from-the-barrel Tiger Beer, among others. The Chilli Crab Fountain was another spectacle to behold with a larger than life crab as a centrepiece and a seemingly endless flow of chilli crab sauce cascading from the fountain’s tiers. Other equally exciting and quirky dishes available were the chicken rice balls, nasi lemak burger and our new favourite dessert, prate crepes. Of course, the star of the night was still the chilled golden goodness from a tap- the great taste of Tiger Beer!
Stomachs were not the only things filled as the locals appetite for good fun and music was satisfied too. Imagine a sexy marching band performed a dance number and the crowd was treated to free Tiger Beer t-shirts that were shot out from t-shirt cannons into the crowd. And that were only the intermissions. Audiences got to enjoy great music by local and foreign acts alike. Local progressive rock band, In Each Hand A Cutlass, performed their epic 20-min song from their latest album, The Kraken, while The Griswolds belted out their popular numbers like Beware The Dog and Heart of a Lion to an enthusiastic crowd. As if that wasn’t enough, super star British rock band, The Kooks, graced the event with their effortless punk rock stylings ala Naïve, She Moves in Her Own Way and Ooh La, amongst others, which was simply euphoric. Perfect end to what was definitely the best way to commemorate our nation’s 50th birthday.
A true celebration of the Singpore spirit, with a brand synonymous with youthful energy and the nation itself, the Tiger Beer SG50 Unofficial Official Party is the right way to kick start the next phase of Singapore’s journey. It goes to show even if you are 50, you are never too old to party.(Can we have the Tiger Beer Unofficial Official After-party please? With a constantly flowing Tiger Beer tap)
